Budget reaction from rural experts at Fisher German

Richard Gadd, Head of Farm Agency at Fisher German, said: "After the last two Budgets in 2024 and 2025 which sent shockwaves through the rural farming industry, this year's comparatively mundane Budget is a breath of fresh air.

"Whilst we were not expecting any major changes to Capital Gains Tax, it was refreshing to reach the end of the Budget without any related announcements apart from the lifetime limit in the reduction of the business asset disposal relief lifetime limit from £1m to £500,000.

"The effects of this policy change is likely to lead to minimal impact for the majority of rural and land-based businesses.

"The vast majority of farmers and landowners will be breathing a sigh of relief since there were no major policy announcements that can be seen as negative and there were a few silver linings with the extended cut to red diesel fuel duty, and with fertiliser import tariffs suspended until December 2027."

Manny Skelton, Partner in Rural Property Management at Fisher German, said: "For many rural businesses and landowners, continuing to review assets to find dormant value, diversify income streams and minimise costs continues to be a key priority.  Although a number of small reliefs were announced today which will ease costs of fertilizer and fuel duty, continuing to review and explore new income streams remain a priority.

"A range of projects have become increasingly popular in the rural sector, which are now only more relevant in light of this Budget. For example, small scale solar schemes associated with high energy use rural businesses are opportunities that can reduce risk, increase income and mitigate cost."
