Peel Ports UK Budget reaction on suspension of tariffs on fertiliser imports
Following the Budget, please see below reaction from Peel Ports Group, the UK's second largest port operator, to the suspension of tariffs on fertiliser imports until the end of 2027.
The port group previously recorded a more than 200% rise in fertiliser import enquiries at the Port of Liverpool earlier this year, as importers reviewed how and where they bring product into the UK amid global shipping uncertainty. Phil Hall, Ports Director - Mersey Ports at Peel Ports, said: "Today's Budget confirms what fertiliser importers have been planning for, which is lower tariffs from late November and a carbon border charge from 1 January. Taken together, the timing here is crucial. The tariff cut opens up a wider range of supply origins, but the window to bring cargoes in before the new regime begins is closing fast.
"This puts a premium on deep-water access and secure, dry storage close to where it's needed. At Glasgow's King George V Dock and the Port of Liverpool, we're working with importers to bring stock in early, hold it safely and release it to farms as the season demands. Buying early is the best protection available to UK growers right now, and our ports are ready to make that possible."
