Openfield Press Release: Openfield Strengthens Sustainability Strategy Through CNG Vehicle Trials
Openfield Group, the British farmer-owned co-operative, has teamed up with Scania and CNG Fuels to trial a 100% RTFO-approved Bio-CNG (compressed natural gas) heavy goods vehicle in a focused initiative to decrease Carbon Emissions.
The CNG Fuels infrastructure sources 100% RTFO-approved Bio-CNG for its stations. CNG vehicles can create considerable savings on fuel of up to 30-40% compared to a similar diesel fuelled vehicle. This innovative partnership will see bulk tipping vehicles moving grain from Openfield member farms to their consumer customers using a Bio-CNG powered vehicle which is Scania’s first ever 6x2 unit fitted with tipping gear, and capable of operating at 44 tonnes with a range of up to 500 miles. Bio-CNG is particularly well suited for the high performance and distance requirements of HGVs, with an expanding network of fast-fill CNG stations providing quick and efficient refuelling, with no smell from spillage and no safety equipment required when refuelling.
Openfield continues to evolve its’ Environmental, Social, and Governance plan, which includes a commitment to become net-zero by 2040 and becoming the leading partner of net zero solutions for seed, fertiliser, grain, and storage. With the size of the Openfield fleet it means that in addition to Openfield’s increased service offer, they now have a direct influence over their road haulage environmental impact, and as they use this Bio-CNG powered vehicle for deliveries they will gain useful insights into how this can support their targets on reducing their haulage carbon footprint.
“Green House Gas emissions from the transportation of grain and oilseeds are the single largest contributor to Openfield’s tonnes of CO2 equivalent footprint”, says Richard Jenner, Member Services Director. “Whilst we seek to become net-zero by 2040, we are also committed to supporting all our consumer customers and farmer members on their own journey to net zero. Using vehicles powered by diesel alternative fuel options, such as Bio-CNG, electric, and HVO, will reduce our transport emissions by up to 90%. “CNG is a promising solution for Openfield as we look to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency, as outcomes of this trial”.
This trial marks an important step in demonstrating how collaboration across the supply chain can accelerate the transition to lower-carbon logistics. By working alongside CNG Fuels and Scania, Openfield is not only investing in innovative transport solutions but also reinforcing its commitment to a more sustainable future for British agriculture, delivering practical progress towards its net-zero ambitions while continuing to support its farmers and customers.
