Growers turn to Nelson as demand rises for lower-input milling wheat

Nelson winter wheat is seeing rising demand this year as growers look for varieties that combine a dependable end market with strong performance in the field and lower input requirements.

Lincoln-based seed and grain specialist COPE is offering buy-back contracts with Heygates Millers at a Group 1 price for Nelson, providing growers with added confidence in the variety's marketability.

With further policy changes and rising input costs, including the introduction of a carbon tax on fertiliser from 2027, on the horizon, farmers are placing greater emphasis on varieties that can deliver consistent performance with fewer inputs.

Nelson has proven its ability to achieve high protein levels from reduced nitrogen (N) applications, while its strong disease resistance package, including excellent resistance to yellow rust, gives growers greater flexibility in their fungicide programmes. Together, these characteristics provide a reliable route to achieving milling specification while helping to manage input costs.

"Farmers are asking different questions than they were a few years ago," says COPE grain director, Tom Desborough. "They're looking for varieties that are resilient, easier to manage and capable of producing a milling quality crop without an intensive input programme."

Well suited to regenerative and cost-conscious farming systems, Nelson has consistently demonstrated the ability to produce high yields, excellent specific weight and strong protein levels from lower nitrogen inputs, while its robust disease resistance package, including excellent resistance to septoria, mildew, yellow rust and brown rust, provides greater flexibility in fungicide programmes.

Suited to a wide range of soil types, it also offers a broad drilling window, strong standing ability and excellent competitiveness against blackgrass, making it a reliable and resilient choice across a variety of growing conditions. Independent and private trials have repeatedly shown the variety to deliver consistent performance in both dry and wet seasons, maintaining its strong yellow rust resistance even under severe disease pressure in 2025.

Having been grown commercially for more than a decade, Nelson has built a loyal following among UK growers. Many have continued to grow the variety year after year, valuing its consistency across different seasons and growing conditions.

George Mason, director of wheat procurement at Heygates Millers, says Nelson is continuing to prove its value as a reliable milling wheat. "We are committed to using as much homegrown wheat as possible, and Nelson is demonstrating that it can consistently achieve the protein levels required. This gives farmers confidence that their investments and efforts can be rewarded through access to a secure market and the potential for additional premium returns."

"Nelson has earned its reputation over many years because it delivers consistently," says Tom at COPE. "We have increased demand from Heygates millers and are seeing more interest from growers who want a variety that works with the direction farming is heading, one that helps them manage costs while still producing a marketable milling crop."

Tristan at Elton Estate in Peterborough has found Nelson winter wheat delivers strong Nitrogen Use Efficiency. "We picked Nelson because of its strong disease resistance. In 2025 it performed well with yields comparable to everything else group 1 wise on the farm, and it got 14% protein from a standard N programme which gave us a premium with Heygates."

Lincolnshire arable farmer, Colin Chappell says that Nelson needs fewer nitrogen applications. "We can reign right back and still get the protein score on it. From 160 kilos of N on a non-milling field, we got milling spec for Nelson."

As the economics of wheat production continue to change, Nelson is demonstrating that lower-input management and premium crop potential can go hand in hand, offering growers a practical way to remain competitive in an increasingly challenging market.
