Future of Farming on Display at College’s Spring Show
Agriculture students from Barnsley College demonstrated their growing expertise at Wigfield Farm’s annual Spring Show, earning praise from visitors and staff alike for their professionalism, confidence, and hands-on skills in livestock management.
The event, held at the College’s own working farm, drew families, friends and community members, offering students a valuable opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice.
Agriculture students from both Level 2 and Level 3 courses showcased key skills including animal handling, public engagement, and stockmanship in a real-world setting.
Among the highlights was the livestock showing, where students expertly led llamas and goats—many of which had only recently begun halter training—demonstrating patience, control, and adaptability.
Pig handling demonstrations and sheep showing further highlighted the students’ practical abilities, teamwork, and readiness for progression into the agricultural workforce.
Peter Wood, Head of Landbased Industries at Barnsley College, said: “The Spring Show is not just a showcase—it’s a real working experience. Our Agriculture students rose to the challenge and showed they have what it takes to succeed in today’s farming industry. Their confidence, skill, and dedication were clear for all to see.
“Events like these are critical for preparing the next generation of agricultural professionals, and we’re incredibly proud of what our students achieved.”
