Farmers "repeatedly failed by the flawed implementation of Sustainable Farming Incentives": Ellie Chowns MP
Dr Ellie Chowns, Green MP for North Herefordshire, has called for certainty in how the government supports farmers in Parliament today. Last month, Window 2 of the Sustainable Farming Incentive 2026 closed after six hours after the £233 million budget had been committed. Farmers told journalists they were "devastated", and felt they had been treated like a "bunch of kids scrabbling on the floor for sweets".
In a further statement, Dr Chowns said:
"Food security is central to national resilience, and farmers need clarity and certainty to help them plan for the future when the climate is changing before our eyes. But they've been repeatedly failed by the flawed implementation of the Sustainable Farming Incentive programme."
"Last month, the £233 million budget for the latest round of SFIs ran out in less than six hours, leaving many farmers empty-handed."
"Greens will keep pushing the government to give farmers the support they need to move towards nature-friendly methods, and we'll keep insisting that public investment is ambitious enough to match the scale of the job we are asking them to do."
