With some producers already feeding first-cut silage intended for later in the year, these highly palatable feeds can help extend forage stocks, fill nutritional gaps and support performance at a competitive cost.

 

"Many farms are seeing grazing pressure increase, while limited grass regrowth and reduced silage yield potential are raising concerns over forage availability later in the season," explains Paula Parker, Marketing and Communications Manager at CirQlar Nutrition, part of ForFarmers. "The current conditions are also affecting the quality of the grass that remains, with lower protein levels adding further pressure to livestock performance.

 

"Co-products can provide a valuable nutritional buffer during this difficult period. Where forage quantity or quality starts to drop, co-products can offer a cost-effective way to maintain nutritional supply without compromising performance."

 

With high levels of energy, digestible fibre and protein, co-products can also help to improve ration palatability and support feed intakes. That is particularly important during hot weather, when intakes may already be under pressure.

 

"Unlike bought-in forage, which can vary significantly in quality and analysis, co-products also offer a more consistent feed source," continues Paula. "This helps maintain ration stability and supports the rumen, which performs best when changes in diet are kept to a minimum.

 

"Co-products such as SelcoPlus are manufactured to order and provide a fresh, consistent and reliable product throughout the year. SelcoPlus also contains a bespoke preservative, helping it retain quality during storage and cope well in hot conditions – it's a product in high demand."

 

Demand is also increasing for Mash Filter Grains in southern England, a well-established co-product providing a highly palatable source of digestible fibre and energy, alongside cost-effective protein. In Scotland, supplies of Supergrains are also available, offering producers another practical option for supporting rations and extending forage stocks.

 

For farmers already concerned about autumn and winter feed stocks, Paula says securing supplies now could provide valuable protection if dry conditions continue.

 

"Clamping co-products now means producers know they have feed available if grazing and silage supplies come under further pressure," concludes Paula. "It can act as a practical insurance policy on farm and reduce the risk of having to source feed at short notice later in the year.
