Dry summer puts dairy water management under the spotlight
As one of the driest summers in recent years continues to challenge farmers, cow health specialists are urging producers to pay close attention to one of the most overlooked drivers of herd health and milk production: water intake.
With prolonged dry conditions reducing grass growth, lowering moisture content in forage and increasing pressure on water supplies in some areas, ensuring cows have sufficient access to clean, drinkable water has never been more important.
That is according to smaXtec, which produces a bolus-based health management system for cattle, after recent results from Irish dairy farms showed how the technology had improved the management of water consumption in dairy herds.
For dairy farmer Paul Ruane, water monitoring prompted a management change which had discernible benefits.
Following an on-farm review of his water intake data, an older, smaller drinking bowl was replaced with a larger, easy-to-clean tip-over trough. Average daily water intake increased from around 95 litres to 110 litres per cow.
Paul says: “Within a couple of days, cows were up two to three litres of milk per day. Rumination also became more consistent over time, reflecting improvements in feed intake, digestion and rumen health.”
On Donal Lyons' farm, smaXtec data highlighted unexpectedly low water intakes while cows were housed indoors, averaging just 60 litres per cow each day despite apparently adequate water availability.
Further investigation revealed elevated iron levels and E. coli contamination in the water supply. After switching to a treated water source, average water intake increased to approximately 90 litres per cow per day. Mastitis cases subsequently declined and overall herd health improved.
Changes in drinking behaviour can provide an early indication of health, dietary or water-supply issues that may be difficult to detect visually.
The in-rumen sensor technology therefore allows farmers and herd managers to continuously measure water intake and drinking behaviour from within the cow's reticulum.
Robert Kirk, smaXtec country sales manager, added: “With dry weather placing additional pressure on both water availability and cow performance, monitoring drinking behaviour is becoming an increasingly valuable management tool.
“The technology monitors drinking by measuring the temporary drop in reticulum temperature that occurs when a cow consumes cooler water, allowing changes individual intake to be identified.
“In a summer when every litre of water matters, knowing not just how much water is available but how much each cow is actually drinking, could prove to be one of the most valuable insights on the farm.”
